debranding

persistent (= irreversible) method
Just download and run Huawei's update for the E1550 - it will replace the dashboard in the flashmemory of the E1762 with Huawei's original generic Mobile Partner. This update is irreversible.
download E1550-Client_Software_WINMACB300D00SP01C03_(UTPS11.300.13.00.03_MAC11.301.06.00.03)_(For_WINXP&2K&Vista_&MAC)_(05019427).zip

volatile (= reversible) method

If you don't want to change the flashmemory of your E1762 permanently, you may also use the following method, by which the flashmemory will just be disabled and instead a microSD-card will be used to store an unbranded generic version of Mobile Partner. In the end you'll have the same result like with the persistent method, but it will be reversible (see below "rebranding"):

  1. Insert a microSD-card into your E1762 and format it.

  2. Download this modified version of Mobile Partner (originally UTPS11.300.05.00.03) - [mirror 1] [mirror 2] [mirror 3] [mirror 4] [mirror 5]

  3. Extract the downloaded rar file into the root of the microSD card.

  4. Run the AT-command: AT^U2DIAG=256 (how to run AT-commands) - this will disable the flashmemory, which will be replaced by the microSD-card, so after plugging in the modem from now on only the microSD-card will show up and the setup of the modified "Mobile Partner" will be run automatically.
    Sometimes AT-commands will result in an "ERROR" - in this case keep reentering the AT-command until "OK" is being returned.

  5. Now you need to safely remove the flashmemory component of your 3G modem:
    • Click the "safely remove hardware" icon in the taskbar:
      Windows XP: safely remove hardwareHuawei E1762 - 3G modem wiki

    • Eject the flashmemory, which should appear as "CD-Drive (X:) Mobile Partner" (or similar designation)
  6. Finally unplug and replug the 3G modem. Now only the microSD-card should appear as new drive and the modded version of Mobile Partner should be run automatically. Of course the microSD-card must remain in your E1762 in order to have installation files for Mobile Partner at hand.

rebranding

In order to get back the flashmemory follow these steps:

  1. Remove the microSD-card or format it.

  2. Run the AT-command: AT^U2DIAG=276 (how to run AT-commands) - this will reenable the flashmemory, which was replaced by the microSD-card.
    Sometimes AT-commands will result in an "ERROR" - in this case keep reentering the AT-command until "OK" is being returned.

  3. Now you need to safely remove the flashmemory component of your 3G modem:
    • Click the "safely remove hardware" icon in the taskbar:
      Windows XP: safely remove hardwareHuawei E1762 - 3G modem wiki

    • Eject the flashmemory, which should appear as "Huawei 3G" (or similar designation)
  4. Finally unplug and replug the 3G modem. Now the original flashmemory and, if a microSD-card is present, also the microSD-drive will appear as drives.

Create Connection Profile

  1. After starting "Mobile Partner" go to "Tools", "Options".
  2. In the following window chose "Profile Management" on the left. Then click the "New" on the upper right.
  3. Now enter the following details:
    • As "Profile Name" enter some title for your connection (e.g. "Vodafone").
    • Under APN chose "Static" and enter your operator's accesspoint in the "APN" field. (For example "pp.vodafone.co.uk" if you are using a British Vodafone PAYG SIM)
    • Don't change the remaining fields unless you know what you do.
  4. Now click "Save" to save your new profile and close the windows by clicking "OK" (lower right).
    Confirm the following question "Do you want to save the changes" with "Yes".
  5. Now chose "Connection" in Mobile Partner. There you should see your new profile. Now you can connect through the newly created profile by clicking "Connect". As soon as the connection has been established, the button is renamed in "Disconnect" and serves to disconnect your connection.

plugins
Mobile Partner has several plugins integrated, which are mostly not activated by default. Some can be enabled by editing the file C:\Program Files\Mobile Partner\config\PluginsConfig.xml.

PluginsConfig.xml
The file is build in the XML-format and consits generally of four sections:
  1. ...
    In the devices section -tages assigns a name to each device model according to it's product/hardware ID (productID can be found unter Tools / Diagnosis after starting Mobile Partner) and a description, which doesn't seem to be of relevance.
    e.g. a tag assigning the name "E180" to the device with the productID "E180" and some description looks like this:

    The devices section usually contains dozens of devices, however only those applying for your device are necessary. The remaining code is useless unless and can be deleted.

  2. ...
    Next there is the plugin section, which again contains -tags, that define all the plugins. However it seems like you can activate plugins (e.g. CallPlugin and CallUIPlugin) even if they are not listed here. So the function of this section is unclear.

  3. ...
    After the tag the device section starts, which will define the available plugins for each model. To add the voice-call plugin (consiting of three plugins) for the E169, the following code is used:

    The device section usually contains dozens of devices, however only those applying for your device are necessary. The remaining code is useless unless and can be deleted.

  4. ...
    The customize section contains changes on the activation or deactivation of plugins, which will overwrite definitions in the device section (above) if your version of Mobile Partner is customized/branded.
    As KTF (presumably a Korean operator) doesn't want their subscribers to have SMS-functionality in Mobile Partner, they remove is by the following code:

    Of course one could also use an -tag here and add plugins instead of removing them (as showed above).

    The customization is dependant on the operator ID (in the example above "KTF_C148"), which is defined in the C:\Program Files\Mobile Partner\SysConfig.dat file, which has a section like this:
    [customize]
    operator=O2_C40
    simtype=SIM/USIM
    uimtype=UIM

    This example shows the operator ID "O2_C40", which stands for O2 Germany's prepaid product "O2 Loop".
    On unbranded versions of Mobile Partner the operator ID is "common", so the section in SysConfig.dat would look like this:
    [customize]
    operator=common
    simtype=SIM/USIM
    uimtype=UIM

    If you edit SysConfig.dat and replace the operator ID by "common" (like above), you will immediately have an unbranded version of Mobile Partner.

voice-call plugin
Since only some Huawei devices support voice-calling, this plugin can only be used properly if supported by your hardware. Currently the following devices are confirmed to support voice calls:
  • E169, E169G
  • K3715
  • K3565
Other devices like the E160/G/E/X can establish calls, but there is no audio. Currently it's unclear if this is caused by hard- or software and so if this can be patched.
Huawei Mobile Partner voice call plugin

customization / operator branding
As mentioned above, the file C:\Program Files\Mobile Partner\SysConfig.dat sets an operator ID, which will determine if Mobile Partner is operator-branded or not.
An operator branding is defined by some ID, which is "O2_C40" in this case:

[customize]
operator=O2_C40
simtype=SIM/USIM
uimtype=UIM

While the unbranded version set the operator ID to "common":

[customize]
operator=common
simtype=SIM/USIM
uimtype=UIM

This operator ID is already important during installation of branded versions of Mobile Partner, since the data.bin file (can be opened with WinRAR), which is part of the setup files, contains a folder named by the operator ID. This folder (e.g. "O2_C40") contains dozens of files, which will be installed instead of the common files, which would be installed for an unbranded version. However branded setup files do also contain the common files, so one could modify the SysConfig.dat file inside the data.bin file in order to make setup install an unbranded verison.

Debranding Huawei USB modems

This is a featured page

Please be aware, that debranding your device may void your warranty!

Like most current USB-modems Huawei's ones have an integrated NAND-flashmemory, in which drivers and access software (so-called dashboard) are stored. Basicly this NAND-flashmemory is an integrated read-only pen-drive, which spares an extra software disk.

When plugging in a Huawei USB-modem under Windows or MacOS first there will only appear that integrated flashmemory as an additional drive. Usually (as long as autorun is not disabled) seconds later the automatic setup of Mobile Partner, Huawei's dashboard, will start and install drivers, too. After drivers have been installed, your computer will also detect the 3G modem and the microSD-drive, beyond the flashdrive.

Since in most countries Huawei's devices are only distributed by operators, Mobile Partner is usually customized to the corresponding operator. Those customizations mostly consist of a branded user interface (operator's logo) and preconfigured settings, but often they lack some features. So you might want to replace that customized version of Mobile Partner by the generic one from Huawei.

With all current Huawei USB-modems (e.g. E160, E169, E172, K3715) you can do that easily by simply running an official update from Huawei. Afterwards there will be Huawei's generic Mobile Partner in your flash memory.
That is of special relevance for Vodafone-branded devices, as their flashmemory contains the "Vodafone dashboard", which is not a modification of Mobile Partner, but a proprietary software, that won't connect to third-party networks.
But debranding your USB modem may also be good for other reasons, since the operator-customized versions of Mobile Partner often have limited capabilites or other restrictions. So the voice-call functionality of those sticks with appropriate hardware (e.g. E169, E180, K3715) may not work with some customized versions of Mobile Partner due to missing plugin libraries.

However debranding may also have a negative impact. On the one hand you may lose your warranty and on the other hand you could lose special functions, which some operator version of Mobile Partner have. E.g. German providers Tchibo, Fonic and O2 come with a plugin for checking and recharging credit, which will be gone after debranding.

updates in general
There are two pieces of software in Huawei's USB modems, that can be updated:

  • the firmware, which is the vital internal operating system of your USB modem
  • the content of the NAND-flashmemory, which is basicly an integrated read-only flashdrive, that contains installation files and drivers for your computer
Whereas the first-mentioned is absolutely vital, the later just spares an additional disk with the corresponding software for installation on your computer.

Usually when running an update for your USB modem both, firmware and those installation files in the flashmemory, will be updated.

Since Mobile Partner (= Huawei's dashboard software) and all the drivers are generic (which means they are compatible with any other model from Huawei and vice-versa), you can not only update your USB modem with updates designed for your certain device, but you can also use updates for any other Huawei USB modem. In that case only the flashmemory will be updated (but not the firmware, since it is not generic but hardware-specific).

Updating USB modems with updates designed for other models makes sense because updates for some sticks are quite outdated and you might want to get a newer version of Mobile Partner into your modem's flashmemory.

So owners of the E169, for which the last update was released in June 2008, can update their flashmemory with the update for the E160G from May 2009, which will bring a newer verison of Mobile Partner, while not affecting the firmware.
Also for some devices there is no update available at all (e.g. K3715). Owners of such can just use the latest update for any other device without worrying.

step-by-step instructions
  1. download the latest update for your modem or, in case you already ran the latest update, check if there is a newer update for another Huawei USB modem, which could contain a newer version of Mobile Partner.
  2. extract the downloaded ZIP
  3. make sure the drivers for your modem have been installed, as the update will require those. Drivers will be installed with Mobile Partner or Vodafone's dashboard (VMC)
  4. plug in your modem
  5. run the update
  6. follow the instructions on the screen
  7. after 2-3 minutes the update should be finished
  8. unplug and replug your USB modem and install the new version of Mobile Partner.
  9. ready.

Note:
  • Before installing the Huawei software, stop all programs which may be running in the background, especially such involved in communication with your modem. You may also need to disable AnyDVD, Nero and firewall applications (e.g. ZoneAlarm) before running the update.
  • sometimes the file extension of updates disappears when downloading. If that's the case add ".zip" to the downloaded file.
